Replacing the missing teeth by non-removable dentures

If one or several teeth are missing, they should be replaced by dentures as soon as possible. It is advisable for aesthetic reasons, for making chewing more efficient, as well as considering the fact that the teeth have a tendency to shift to the empty space of the teeth missing. Such a shifting can lead to occlusion deformities. Non-removable dentures are the most convenient for patients. It means that after the restoration the dentures should remain in the mouth permanently – they cannot be removed and they are stable. Patients feel comfortable and safe, and such a restoration is very similar to that of the natural teeth. It is very essential, since the dentist's main task is to make the new restoration as  natural to the teeth as possible, because all what is “unnatural or odd'' makes discomfort in patients.
There are several kinds of dentures:
  • Implants – they could be called artificial tooth roots. Implants are made of extremely durable material, for example, titanium alloys, etc. The implant takes a shape of a screw and it is screwed into the jaw bone while the patient is under anaesthesia. Depending on the situation, it integrates into the bone structure  within 3 to 8 months. After this period the implant can be used as a base for the next step of the restoration – the crown, that can be made of the before- mentioned materials. Most commonly the crowns are  made from metal ceramics and porcelain. The structure based on implants is an optimal method of restoration, since the natural teeth are not affected (this system is functioning independently). Implant in some situations is often the only way to avoid the use of removable dentures
  • Bridges – this is a structure in which several interconnected artificial crowns are based on two or several natural teeth, replacing the missing teeth. There may be cases in which implants cannot be used due to bone specificities, health problems, etc. In such situations the natural teeth are prepared  and the bridges are made in the laboratory. The bridge is non-removable which makes this  restoration positive, the negative aspect is that the natural tooth is ground off. Bridges, like crowns, can be made of plastic, cast metal, metal composite, metal ceramics and porcelain.
